Why do we sweat?
The reason why we sweat is to cool our body down. Some areas of our body have a higher concentration of sweat glands.
There are two types of sweat glands. The eccrine glands are found on the palms, soles of our feet, the forehead, cheeks and armpits. They produce odourless, clear fluid which when evaporates from the body surface helps to cool the body down.
The other type of sweat glands is the apocrine glands. These are found in the armpits and genital area. They produce a thicker fluid and when this fluid comes in contact with bacteria on the skin surface, produces ‘body odour’.
Both types of sweat glands are activated by nerves in response to hormones, emotions or physical activity.
In people who suffer from excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands (mainly eccrine glands) are overreactive producing more sweat.
It is important to establish if there are any medical causes for the excessive sweating before treatment is undertaken therefore consultation with a doctor is key.
