Medical Skin Peels

Medical Skin Peels

This is a popular skin rejuvenation treatment but is also a treatment option for a number of conditions. A chemical, when applied to the surface of the skin after appropriate preparation, causes the top layer of the skin to separate from the deeper layers. The top layer of skin peels back to reveal new skin underneath. The amount of skin removed depends on the type of chemical used, the strength of the product and how long it is left in contact with the skin. The result is a much thicker healthier skin that will grow in its place. As the new skin is very sensitive good sun protection must be worn post peel to protect it from harmful UV rays.

Medical Skin Peels are a recognised treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. It is a very quick and effective way to get rid of dull skin to reveal a glowing skin. Although there are noticeable changes seen after just one peel, repeated courses are recommended to achieve optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a Medical Skin Peel?
The skin will be cleansed to prepare for the application of the peel. The peel product is then applied with a brush carefully to cover all areas of the face. This is left on for a specified time according to the type of peel. You may experience a warm and tingling sensation. I will be constantly monitoring your reaction and observing your skin closely throughout the treatment. After about 5-8 minutes the product is neutralised and removed. There are some peels that need to be left on for a specified number of hours before they are removed. Further nourishing serums will be applied to the skin according to the information gathered at your consultation as well as a high strength SPF. Some brands offer a complimentary post-peel pack to be used for the next 10 days.
What can I expect after the treatment? How much peeling will I get?
The skin may feel tight and red for the next 24 hours, and the wearing of makeup is discouraged during that time. It is essential to follow your after-care protocol especially if the product was left on and is to be washed off after 8 hours. It is essential to apply high SPF even on cloudy days. For two to three days after the treatment, the skin may be flaky depending on the depth of peel. For superficial peels this does not require any downtime but it is advised not to exfoliate the skin, have any laser treatment or have any waxing done. For medium depth peels it is quite possible to experience gentle peeling of the skin and some downtime may be required. It is important to follow the recommended post-peel skincare routine and avoid picking the skin. For deeper peels downtime is unavoidable as exposure even to minimal sun can be uncomfortable. The greatest change is achieved with the deeper peels but the downtime can be more difficult to manage. No matter how deep the peel is you can rest assured that the skin will regrow and heal completely.
What product is in the Medical Skin Peel and could this harm my skin?
This is dependent on the brand. The commonest ingredients are glycolic acid, salicylic acid or lactic acid based. The use of these substances dates back to Ancient Egyptians when the aristocrats of that society bathed in milk and rubbed grape skins on their skin. The current medical peels are derived from these naturally occurring substances. They have a nourishing effect helping to chemically exfoliate the skin to reveal new skin without causing any harm.

Obagi® Medical have a Blue Peel Radiance which is superficial salicylic acid based peel (light peel) and can be performed without any specific preparation. This is a great skin peel to have before starting on your Obagi® Medical skin journey.

AlumierMD offer a range of peels which are lactic acid based and can be customised to target specific skin concerns. They all require specific aftercare products to gain optimum results.

ZO® SkinHealth have a range of peels some of which can be performed by you at home with Dr Tash’s guidance and some which have to be performed in the Clinic. The ZO® Stimulator Peel does not need any prior preparation but the ZO® 3-Step Medical Peel requires preparation and the length of preparation depends on your skin type.

Neostarata® Prosystem Peels offers a highly effective, superficial peeling system that is clinically proven to achieve outstanding and predictable results for skin rejuvenation. It offers the flexibility of a range of peels for different skin concerns.

What type of peel should I have?
During our consultation, I will design a bespoke plan of treatment that may or may not involve other modalities to achieve optimal results.
How long will the treatment take?
The application of the peel will only take 20 – 30 minutes.
I am planning a holiday in the sun when should I have my Medical Skin Peel treatment?
The skin is more susceptible to damage for 4 weeks after a medical peel. If possible, have your peel 2 weeks after the holiday and always apply your SPF and follow general sun protection advice like avoiding the midday sun and wearing a sun hat.
Do Medical Peels get rid of scarring?
Yes it can do but a course of treatment targeting the scarring may be required.
Does it work for pigmentation?
Uneven pigmentation is mostly caused by sun damage and this responds very well to Medical skin peeling. However successful treatment of pigmentation requires the cause of the pigmentation to be eradicated. If the pigmentation is caused by factors such as active acne, hormones or medication then it is more crucial to treat the cause than the effect initially.
How do I maintain a blemish free skin?
It is recommended to have maintenance Medical Skin Peel programme and consider a prescription-based skincare routine. I can help you with advice as what will be best for you.
