With so many treatments available out there, it can be overwhelming not knowing what treatment you would benefit from. In this blog, I discuss my top tips for youthful-looking skin.

There are slight differences on what to consider at what age in order to keep your skin looking fabulous and give you a healthy glow.

The number one cause of skin ageing is UV radiation as I have said many times before. Therefore, protect your skin. This goes for children and teenage skin as well. A daily sunscreen all year round will prevent early ageing.

How can you help Teenage Skin?

If your teenager has blemishes, blackheads or whiteheads, choose products with salicylic acid to help unclog the pores. Avoid picking the spots and see the General Practitioner sooner rather than later especially if the blemishes are larger so that treatment can be started straight away. It takes at least 3months for treatment to have an effect so be patient. If any scarring develops you must see the GP for further treatment instead of relying on products from shops.

If they are using makeup, choose mineral-based, non-comedogenic products. Always encourage makeup to be removed at night and don’t use face wipes. Instead, choose a cleanser that does not dry out the skin. After washing, pat dry to avoid traumatising or drying out the skin. What you have to remember is that if you dry out oily skin, it will respond by making excess oil!

It is a good idea to get them into the habit of wearing sunscreen daily so that any mild scarring they get is not worsened by UV damage.

In summary:

  1. Sunscreen
  2. Good cleanser to be used twice daily
  3. Remove make-up at night

What to consider in your 20s?

In this group, add in the following products.

Consider an eye cream:

The under-eye area is quite delicate and is one of the first areas to reveal fine lines. Incorporating a medical-grade eye cream will help to rejuvenate this area.

Consider adding in a Retinol

The benefits of retinoids are multi-fold from being an anti-ageing product as well as an anti-blemish or anti-acne ingredient. Please see my blog on the benefits of retinol. It increases collagen levels while reducing collagen break down. It evens out poor skin texture, evens out skin tone, reduces pore size, de-clogs blocked pores, reduces blemishes and normalises sensitive skin. By increasing cellular turnover, old skin is shed from the surface faster revealing healthier, new skin. Some people get irritation from retinoids therefore it should be introduced slowly into your skincare routine.

Consider adding in Vitamin C

This is an antioxidant which protects your skin, reduces pigmentation, brightens your skin and increases collagen which helps to plump up your skin. You can read more about the benefits of vitamin C for your skin in my blog.

What does a medical-grade Vitamin C serum do for your skin?

In order to help the above active ingredients penetrate the skin, you may want to consider a toner. Toners help to clean the skin thoroughly following cleansing and also reduce the pH of the skin to allow product penetration. It is best applied with a rough gauze instead of a cotton wool pad to reduce wastage while facilitation physical exfoliation.

Preventative treatments for wrinkles may be considered in your late 20s in some individuals. This includes antiwrinkle injections once a medical consultation has been carried out to assess suitability.

What to consider in your 30s to maintain youthful-looking skin?

This is the age at which you start losing collagen faster than you make it so it is a good idea to introduce regular medical skin peels, microneedling, mesotherapy and skin boosters to enhance and rejuvenate the skin.

Medical skin peels help to exfoliate the dead surface layer of skin. This encourages the skin to become more efficient at producing new skin cells.  It helps to reduce blemishes and fine lines while improving superficial pigmentation and scarring. Medical peels vary in the depth of penetration but progressive results can be achieved with monthly superficial peels.

Microneedling is performed with a medical device with multiple sterile needles to repeatedly puncture the skin. New collagen production is stimulated while old collagen is broken down. The resultant skin remodelling aims to improve pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and scarring in the face.

Mesotherapy involves injecting a cocktail of specific ingredients for targetted effects straight into the superficial layer of the skin. The treatment aims are reducing pigmentation, improving fine lines and wrinkles in the face.

Skin boosters are injectable moisturisers containing hyaluronic acid to deeply moisturise and plump up the skin. The aim is to reduce wrinkles.

Additional ingredients to consider in your skincare regime are ceramides, peptides and growth factors to help stimulate collagen production.

Cosmetic injectables may be considered to reduce wrinkles, augment certain features and aid beautification of the face. This includes antiwrinkle injections for wrinkles that appear on movement of the upper face.  Dermal filler treatments are used for beautification of the face by enhancing and contouring the cheeks, contouring the jaw and augmenting the chin. Lip enhancement is also popular in this age group. These treatments always require prior medical consultation to discuss risks and benefits.

What to consider in your 40s to maintain youthful-looking skin?

Wrinkles begin to become fixed over the age of forty. Cosmetic injectables can be successfully incorporated with the above skincare and skin rejuvenation treatments already discussed. The aim of treatment is rejuvenation and restoration rather than beautification in this age group.

Skincare ingredients to incorporate at this age is hyaluronic acid but this has to be low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid otherwise it will just sit at the top of the skin.

How to improve your looks in your 50s and beyond?

The menopause has a detrimental effect on the skin and hair. Wrinkles and sunspots may suddenly appear more pronounced due to hormone imbalances associated with the menopause.

If you have been taking good care of your skin, then just continue. It may be possible to use cosmetic injectables to enhance specific features and improve your confidence. However, cosmetic injectables are not very effective in improving the overall condition of the skin and often this requires a skin rejuvenation treatment. These are discussed above. Some people even consider deep chemical peels and/or surgical intervention to get more permanent results.

It is best to have a bespoke consultation to discuss your concerns so that a suitable treatment plan can be formulated. Do get in contact to arrange your complimentary consultation with Dr Tash Kanagasabai at Skin Enhance Clinic.
